Camille Bellanger studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the direction of Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889) and William Bouguereau ( 1825 – 1905 ). He won the second Prix de Rome in 1875, and went on to receive numerous awards for his paintings thereafter. Bellanger regularly exhibited his work at the Paris Salon . He became a drawing teacher at the Saint-Cyr military school , and was appointed naval painter on February 22 , 1896. He received the insignia of Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1911 (decree of July 30).
