E. P. Brandard’s great skill and experience as an engraver make etching comparatively easy for him so far as technical matters are concerned. Observer the importance he has given to the sky, as this is not very common in etchings. The opposition of dark trees against light sky, and light tress against dark sky, is not new, but it is very skilfully employed. The subject is pleasantly illustrative of the quiet kind of English scenery that the poet Cowper loved.
Edward Paxman Brandard was an English painter, engraver and etcher. He studied the techniques of graphic art under his brother, Robert Brandard (1805-1862). During the early part of his career, E. P. Brandard was known for his steel engravings after many contemporary painters. Both brothers worked closely with J. M. W. Turner on some of his famous engraved sets of landscapes. Edward Paxman Brandard also engraved Constable’s The Hay Wain and Salisbury Cathedral and was commissioned by Queen Victoria to engrave a large view of Balmoral Castle.
