In a Gothic-vaulted communal cell, a group of prisoners seated upon the straw have congregated around a male figure dressed in black, who relates a story to the others. A guard, identifiable by his breastplate and helmet, has joined the small party and kneels, apparently about to strike the teller of the tale, causing the group to cower away in fear. Interspersed around the cell, some of the inmates stand apart from the others or can be seen slumped against the stone walls.
Firmin Bouvy (active 1845) was born in Deynze, a town situated south of Ghent. Primarily a painter of portraits, figures and interiors, Bouvy studied at the Antwerp Academy, where this original work was painted. Having emigrated to San Francisco in the 1870s, the artist spent the remainder of his life in the United States.
