Sacrifice to Asclepius (the Greco-Roman god of healing, born a mortal), after Popelin: a young boy sacrificing a rooster on a tall, ornate altar.
Gustave-Léon-Antoine-Marie Popelin was a French painter and photographer. Son of the painter and enameller Claudius Popelin, Gustave Paupelin received advice from Ernest Hébert, then entered the School of Fine Arts in 1879 where he joined the workshops of Gabriel Ferrier and Eugène Giraud. After an unsuccessful attempt, he obtained the Prix de Rome in 1882 with Mattathias refusing to sacrifice to the idols. He exhibited at the Salon of French artists between 1880 and 1911 , paintings of History and portraits: he obtained an honorable mention in 1880, a second class medal in 1896, and a bronze medal at the 1900 World’s Fair. In 1892, he married Henriette Doumerc. The couple live in Paris at 7 rue de Téhéran 1, including a son, Claude Popelin, lawyer, married to Nina Negri in 1927 2. He died in February 19373. The Musée d’Orsay has an important photographic collection.
