Merton is one of the oldest and most beautiful colleges in Oxford with medieval and 17th-century buildings – including our 13th-century chapel – and glorious, extensive gardens protected by the city wall.
Thomas specialized in the techniques of engraving and lithography on vedutas, highly detailed city or landscapes. Thomas was exceptionally talented. He had a truthful way of seeing things and putting them on paper. He was an excellent representative of the class of artists who, without imaginative invention, see clearly, and interpret rapidly and skillfully, what they see. Thomas was most skillful with the etching needle and after his death left behind many plates of excellent quality in their kind.
