Very little is known about Maglin, except for his illustrative work for this and another Louys book, Billitis, and that he exhibited at the Paris Salon. In 1894, landscapes by Maglin were included in two exhibitions of impressionist and symbolist art at Le Barc de Boutteville, one of the few galleries in Paris in the 1890s where younger artists were welcome to show their work. Louys, a friend of Debussy, Andre Gide and Oscar Wilde, was born Pierre Félix Louis in Ghent, Belgium, but relocated to France where he spent the rest of his life.
