Artist: Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (English, 1802-1873)
Medium: Antique Hand pulled copper plate etching on wove paper after the original oil on millboard by master etcher Charles Oliver Murray (Scottish, 1842-1923).
Dimensions: Image Size 6 5/8 x 8 3/4 inches.
Framed Dimensions: Approximately 16 x 18 inches.
Framing: This piece has been professionally matted and framed using all new materials.
This is a good example of Landseer’s slight but broadly truthful landscape painting. The piece reaches perfection in one respect, it absolute unity of subject and impression; a unity that would have been impossible if gamekeepers and gentlemen had been introduced, even in the distance. Men may visit a desolate scene of this kind, but the eagle belongs to it.
