Babes in the Wood; two young children, looking upwards to left, frightened, the girl clasping her hands together, the boy with his arms around her neck, protectively, a small dragon hanging on a string by their heads to left and a statuette of a lion and a baton on a table in front to right.
Sir Hubert von Herkomer was a British painter of German descent, and also a pioneering film-director and composer. Though a very successful portraitist, especially of men, he is mainly remembered for his earlier works that took a realistic approach to the conditions of life of the poor. Hard Times, showing the family of a travelling day-labourer at the side of a road, is probably his best known work.
