Mr. Slocombe, as is well known, is one of the most skillful etchers of the contemporary English school. His work is neither heavy nor hard; he seems to avoid the strongly bitten thick line and plates of moderate dimensions, and he suggests more than he delineates. As an example of this suggestive work, I may point to the little crowd in the street, which seems to be gathered at a sale by auction. It is always a certain proof of accomplishment when an etcher places his figures easily and with the art that is apparently artless. Here, for example, the lady and the little girl dragging her tiny cart are sketched with so little pretension that the reader will hardly observe, at first, how much drawing there is in them.
Edward Slocombe was a member of a very artistic family that included his artist brothers Fred, and Charles Philip. The etched work of the Slocombe brothers, Charles Philip, Edward, and Frederick was highly popular at the end of the nineteenth century. Edward was a painter and printmaker who etched many of Britain and Europe’s historical buildings, including castles and churches. Edward C. Slocombe was born in London and was part of a noted family of artists. He was a painter, etcher, and mezzotint engraver. Some of his etchings were published by the best know publishers of that time. Several of his etchings of church buildings were published by the Fine Art Society. He was exhibiting prints in the 1880s and 1890s during the etching revival in England. He was a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers.
