One of the most famous of his works is “La Permission Refugee” showing two mountebanks and their dogs, who have been refused permission to perform in the market-place.
Pierre-Marie Beyle was a French painter and illustrator of the late nineteenth century. Beyle was born in Lyon, France. He moved to Paris and exhibited at The Paris Salon from 1867 to 1900. He also exhibited at The Grafton Gallery, London and The Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. He painted coastal scenes, Orientalist subjects, and romantic genre scenes. He is best known as a painter of scenes from everyday life. He is buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery. His work can be seen in The Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
