Painted in 1875. An etching of the present work was executed by Abel Lurat (1829-1890), an etcher and engraver who himself regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon after 1865, and won acclaim for his interpretations of contemporary French paintings.
Anatole Vely was a French painter who was born in 1838. Several works by the artist have been sold at auction, including ‘La meditation’ sold at Sotheby’s London ’19th Century European Paintings Including Spanish Painting, The Orientalist Sale, and German, Austrian, Scandinavian and Symbolist Works ‘ in 2010 for $41,540. The artist died in 1882.
