Flore Denois (or Denoix) was the daughter of the holder of the charge of smuggler charged to cross the Yonne with the help of a boat in Vaux. Aged 14, Flore, she also handled the heavy boat using a long pole in support of the bottom of the river. Louis Adan, artist painter born in 1839, being vacationing in Vaux, observes this scene.
Louis Émile Adan, born and died in Paris was a French painter and illustrator. Louis Adan is born on March 26 , 1839 in the 2nd oldest district of Paris . He is the son of the painter Hippolyte Benjamin Adan (Paris 1797 – Courbevoie 1876) – a student of Paul Delaroche – and Émilie Delarémanichère (Paris 1813 – Courbevoie 1885). The November 26 , 1867 , he married Marion Adèle Binoche ( New Orleans 1843 – Paris 1923), a cousin by marriage, daughter of rentiers, at the 10th arrondissement of Paris . He entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts as a pupil of François – Édouard Picot and Alexandre Cabanel. His workshop is located at 75 rue de Courcelles . During his long career, he painted landscapes , genre scenes , still lifes and watercolors . He also illustrates several editions (including Flaubert’s “Un Coeur mere”, “Fables” by La Fontaine and Florian , “Œuvres complètes” by Alphonse Daudet ). In 1870 , he executed a monumental composition 2 representing the Trinity in Glory , set up in the choir of the Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul Church in Courbevoie in 1892. This is his only known religious work. From 1863 until his death, he exhibited at all salons . He was knighted the Legion of Honor in 1892 . He dies, almost centenarian, the February 5 , 1937 in the 8th arrondissement of Paris . Two of his paternal cousins are also painters: Louis Félix Adan (Paris 1825 – 1892) and Eugène Xavier Adan (Paris 1826 – 1884). His sister Marie Adan (Paris 1846 – 1922) married on April 11, 1872 in Courbevoie the painter Alexis Douillard ( Nantes 1835 – Meudon 1905).
