“A Revelation” is a typical work. In it a young Girl girl, contemplating herself in a hand-mirror, arrives for the first time at the conclusion that she is as beautiful as she has wished herself to be.
Jules-Charles Aviat , pseudonym of Jules-Charles Mauperrin, was a French painter Son of Jean Baptiste Mauperrin, a blatier merchant , and Marie Marguerite Doux, Jules-Charles Mauperrin was born onJune 26, 1844 in Brienne-le-Château. After the death of his father, (1854) his mother remarried to the son of a bourgeois family from Arcis-sur-Aube , Pierre Antoine Aviat, inspector at the Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans, with whom she had two children, Marie Antoinette and Albert, who will become an aquafortist and will settle in Vendôme. Pierre Aviat gives his name to Jules-Charles, which becomes for the civil status: Jules-Charles Mauperrin Aviat. The younger brother of his father-in-law, Auguste Louis Aviat (1819-1876) was a landscape painter, draftsman and photographer, it was undoubtedly following his interest in the latter’s work that he decided to become a painter. He chose his stepfather’s artist name and became Jules Aviat for the arts. Jules Aviat left to study in Rome from 1867 to 1870. There he met and became a pupil of the director of the Académie de France in Rome , Ernest Hébert, who assisted him with his advice. Back in France, Jules Aviat was a pupil of Jules-Isidore Lafrance, Carolus-Duran and Léon Bonnat. With the latter, Ernest Hébert and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes , all three of his friends, he participated in the decoration of the Panthéon in Paris. Jules Aviat married (1875) Marguerite Françoise Flora Munoz, daughter of a Parisian psychiatrist of Havana origin. They had five children. Towards the end of his life, Jules Aviat retired to Périgueux where he continued to paint the notables of the region, as well as the green landscapes of Périgord. The Perigord Art and Archeology Museum in Périgueux retains several of his works. He was the friend of Georges Grellet. He died on January 23 , 1931 in Périgueux and is buried in the North cemetery of this city.
