Interior of a cottage where two children are amusing another couple with a stick on a piece of string, which they are pulling across the ground to tease a cat, one kneeling on the ground to right watching the kitten, the other leaning against her brother, while the mother sits to left, holding a sleeping baby in her lap.
Alexander Hohenlohe Burr was the younger brother of John Burr, he was born of Scotch parents at Manchester in 1837, where he studied under John Ballantyne and Robert Scott Lauder. He exhibited first in 1856 at the Royal Scottish Society. In 1861 he removed to London. His subjects are never ambitious, being chiefly drawn from scenes in humble life. Alexander Hohenlohe Burr was a member of the celebrated ‘Scott Lauder Group’ at the Trustees’ Academy in the early 1860’s, which included his brother John, Chalmers, McTaggart, Orchardson and Pettie. Burr, like many of the group, followed the established tradition of moving to London in 1861 seeking recognition at the Royal Academy. This fine example of Scottish rural genre, inspired by Wilkie and the Dutch tradition, exploits the comic potential and cosy sentimentality of a theme popularised by the Faeds.
