The Bassai Sculptures The Phigaleian Frieze are carved marble block from the South side of the continuous frieze of the temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassai. The East and South frieze shows the battle between Amazons and the Greeks which was led by Herakles. This block shows wounded combatants on both sides. On the left, the block shows an Amazon striding towards the wounded Greek youth who has fallen on the ground a raises his right hand behind his head. Another Amazon, to the right, appears to prepare to strike the Greek. On the right of the block an Amazon supports a wounded companion seated on the ground with her head drooping and her arms relaxed. The block consists of several fragments.
