Jean Geoffroy , also known under the pseudonym Geo (who pronounced Jo ), was a French painter and illustrator . Son of Jean-Baptiste, tailor of clothes, and Rosalie Dickinson 1 . A pupil of Léon Bonnat , then Adam Levasseur and Adolphe Yvon 2 , Jean Geoffroy exhibited in 1874 at the Salon de Paris and then at the Salon des artistes français, of which he became a member in 1883. That same year, he received An honorable mention, a third-class medal in 1886, and a gold medal in 1900 for the Universal Exhibition . He was promoted Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1885 3 . Jean Geoffroy practiced genre scenes , portraits , and made a reputation by painting the charms of childhood ( Le Compliment a day of celebration at the school , museum of the Schevinage of Saintes ). At the beginning of his career, he lived with a couple of teachers, over a school. He knows how to translate with undeniable sincerity the naive charm of schoolchildren. He painted numerous picturesque scenes with naturalist accents. His works include: Prayer of the humble or the Abandoned , The Day of the Visit to the Hospital , The Resigned , The Convalescent , The Night Asylum , The Hungry , The Necklace of Misery . Around 1876 , he met Hetzel who hired him as a book illustrator for childhood and youth. From 1880 , he signed his illustrations of the pseudonym of “Geo” .
